Monaco DL: Serem chases breakthrough moment

All eyes will be on 17-year-old Kenyan sensation Edmund Serem tonight as he lines up for the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Monaco Diamond League, part of the prestigious Wanda Diamond League circuit.
In an exclusive interview with The Eastleigh Voice, the rising star exuded confidence and maturity beyond his years ahead of what could be a defining race in his young career.
“I want to have a good race,” Serem said. Asked whether the presence of teammate Abraham Kibiwott added pressure, he was adamant, “Competing with myself is the goal. I don’t focus on someone else I just want to give my best.”
“I want to set a personal best. That is my goal tonight,” he added.
Serem, who claimed a statement victory at the Kip Keino Classic earlier this season, will face stiff competition at the Stade Louis-II track, including Morocco’s world and Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali, and his compatriot Abraham Kibiwott, a seasoned campaigner still searching for peak form after placing second at the Kenyan Championships.
Beyond the steeplechase, five other Kenyan stars will be in action tonight, each carrying medal ambitions and national pride into Monaco’s electric atmosphere.
In the men’s 800m, Olympic and world silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi leads the Kenyan charge.
The 20-year-old arrives in red-hot form, having already clocked a world-leading 1:41.95 in Stockholm his fifth career sub-1:42 time.
Wanyonyi faces a fierce field including reigning world champion Marco Arop of Canada and Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, the latter of whom won in Monaco last year with a blistering 1:41.46.
In the women’s 1000m, Commonwealth Games champion Mary Moraa will join rising star Nelly Chepchirchir in a competitive middle-distance clash. While Moraa seeks to bounce back from a disappointing ninth-place finish in Eugene, Chepchirchir enters Monaco unbeaten in 2025, including a Diamond League win in Paris where she clocked 3:57.02 over 1500m.
The duo will battle top contenders like Australia’s Jessica Hull in a race set for 9:43 PM EAT.
Kenya’s Jacob Krop, the World Championships silver medallist, will close the night in the men’s 5000m, aiming to reassert himself against a loaded international field. Known for his strong finishes, Krop will be looking to sharpen his form ahead of the World Athletics Championships later this year.
