Al Udeid Air Base, located about 30 kilometres southwest of Doha, Qatar, is one of the most important US military bases in the Middle East.

The base is home to nearly 8,000 American troops and also hosts forces from the UK, Australia and other allied countries.

Also known as Abu Nakhla Air Base, Al Udeid serves as the forward headquarters for the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in the Middle East and parts of Asia.

It currently serves as a strategic command and logistics centre for US operations in Iraq and features the Gulf region’s longest runway.

It plays a key role in air operations, intelligence, logistics, and refuelling missions

The base has a 12,000-foot runway that can handle large aircraft, including bombers and refuelling planes. It also includes command centres, aircraft shelters, and living facilities for military personnel.

Qatar granted the United States access to the base in 2000.

In 2001, American forces took over operational control, and by December 2002, Doha and Washington had signed an agreement officially recognising the US military’s presence, according to the London-based intelligence firm Grey Dynamics.

In 2024, CNN reported that the United States had agreed to extend its military presence at Al Udeid for another decade.

British forces also use the base during regional operations and training.
