The Maasai Mara National Reserve has officially been listed in the World Book of Records under the title “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration,” marking a historic moment for Kenya’s conservation and tourism landscape.

The recognition celebrates the Maasai Mara’s vital role in hosting the most spectacular land-based animal migration on Earth, involving over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes moving through the greater Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.

The annual spectacle draws global attention for its scale, survival drama, and ecological importance.

Santosh Shukla, President of the World Book of Records, in a letter dated July 15, 2025, said the inclusion honours not only the natural phenomenon but also Kenya’s role in environmental preservation.

“We are delighted to inform you that the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially included in the World Book of Records under the distinguished title: ‘World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration’ for hosting the largest and most dramatic annual land animal migration on Earth,” he stated.

The letter was addressed to Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu.

Shukla added that the recognition underscores Kenya’s commitment to global biodiversity, sustainable eco-tourism, and wildlife conservation.

A formal presentation ceremony is expected to take place at the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with details to be announced.

Governor Ole Ntutu welcomed the news, describing it as a proud moment for Kenya and a powerful validation of the conservation efforts his administration has championed since taking office.

“Upon assuming office two and a half years ago, my administration launched an ambitious campaign to restructure and revitalise the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with the objective of preserving and enhancing this invaluable natural asset,” Ntutu noted.

He cited key initiatives such as the introduction of the Maasai Mara National Reserve Management Plans, strengthening ranger capacity, improving internal road infrastructure, and adopting technology-driven conservation tools to ensure the long-term survival of the reserve.

“Today, we are deeply honoured to receive this prestigious recognition from the World Book of Records, UK, officially certifying the Maasai Mara National Reserve as the home of the world’s greatest annual terrestrial wildlife migration,” the governor added.

Beyond the migration itself, the governor highlighted the Maasai Mara’s broader importance, noting that the reserve protects over 25 per cent of Kenya’s biodiversity.

He said Kenya plays a central role in supporting the migration cycle, especially as animals cross into the Mara to graze and mate, an essential link in the ecological chain.

“This recognition is a proud moment for Kenya, for Narok County, for our conservation partners, and for all who cherish the Maasai Mara. We celebrate it with joy and extend a warm invitation to the world: come and witness this marvel of nature with us. Visit the Maasai Mara, where every crossing is a testament to life’s resilience.”

The World Book of Records is a global organisation that documents and certifies extraordinary achievements and promotes awareness of global heritage, peace, and conservation. Its certification of the Maasai Mara places the reserve in a distinguished class of internationally recognised natural wonders.
