Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has called on residents of Kilifi County to collect over 33,000 unclaimed title deeds, cautioning that the documents are more secure in the hands of landowners than in government custody.

Speaking in Malindi during the official opening of the Malindi Land Offices, Wahome said the new facility marks a major milestone in land administration in the Coast region, where land issues have long posed challenges to local communities.

The new land offices will serve Malindi and Magarini sub-counties and are expected to significantly improve access to land services for area residents.

"Now that the titles are near you, please come pick them. Take care of your titles and don’t sell land carelessly,” said Wahome.

She revealed that 7,730 title deeds are ready for immediate collection at the new offices. These include 5,881 titles for Weru Group Ranch, 1,363 for Mwele Simakeni, and 486 for Msabaha.

Wahome urged landowners to clear any outstanding land dues to facilitate the issuance of title deeds and emphasised the urgency of concluding all pending adjudication processes.

Kilifi County currently has 40 registered adjudication sections, 178,041 registered parcels, and six ongoing adjudication areas, including Kibokoni Settlement Scheme, Chakama Phase 3, Adu Kamale, Pumwani Phase 3, Adu Chamali, and Wakala.

She also addressed the issue of land ownership by foreigners, clarifying that non-citizens are only eligible for 99-year leaseholds, not freehold land.

She called on those holding improper documentation to return the titles for correction.

The CS further pledged to dismantle land cartels and called on stakeholders to work together to ensure fairness and transparency in land transactions.

She emphasised the importance of land ownership in facilitating development, highlighting the expansion of Malindi Airport as a regional priority.

Wahome added that the Ministry is working to strengthen the functions of Kilifi’s two Land Control Boards to better serve the public.

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, who also spoke during the event, welcomed the opening of the new offices and urged Lands officers to support the public efficiently.
