Murkomen puts inciting politicians on notice, vows crackdown in Rift Valley
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has put politicians who incite ethnic tensions in the Rift Valley on notice, warning that the government will crack down on anyone using divisive language to cause unrest.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner’s office ahead of the Jukwaa La Usalama security tour, Murkomen said the government will not tolerate leaders who make inflammatory remarks aimed at dividing communities.
“One of the key concerns for us here is a few individuals who are inciting members of the public and turning communities against each other,” said Murkomen.
"Security agencies will be very firm with anyone making inciteful statements aimed at dividing communities."
Murkomen pointed out that most of those behind the incitement are not from Uasin Gishu or even the wider Rift Valley region. According to him, these individuals are political actors trying to create division in order to discredit the government.
“Most of these individuals are political actors who are not from Uasin Gishu or the Rift Valley. They try to create a wedge between communities to serve their political interests,” he added.
Murkomen claimed that during the June 25 and July 7 protests, some of these actors attempted to disrupt peace by importing goons from counties like Nakuru, Laikipia, and Trans Nzoia.
Investigations are currently underway to identify and arrest the key financiers and inciters behind these events.
Murkomen assured that those found culpable, especially those financing attacks on property, will face the full force of the law.
“We will be ruthless against those attempting to destabilise peace in the Rift Valley. The government will not allow anyone to exploit ethnic tensions for political mileage,” he declared.
The Interior CS and his delegation are leading a series of town hall meetings with local leaders, security stakeholders, and members of the public in Uasin Gishu.
The security tour will continue in Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Baringo counties from Thursday to Saturday, concluding in Trans Nzoia County on Monday.
