The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has issued a warning to Kenyans about a fraudulent scheme circulating on WhatsApp and other online platforms under the name Inua Jamii Foundation Empowerment, cautioning that the programme is fake and unauthorised.

In a public advisory released on Monday, the ministry clarified that no such foundation exists and that it has no links to the government or its official cash transfer initiatives.

“This so-called Inua Jamii Foundation Empowerment is a scam,” said Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs Principal Secretary Joseph Motari.

“All official communication on Inua Jamii cash transfer programmes comes only from verified channels of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs.”

Motari explained that the fraudulent scheme is deliberately crafted to mislead vulnerable Kenyans by offering false promises of financial aid.

Suspicious links

The scam is typically spread through unsolicited messages, suspicious links, and fake claims shared via WhatsApp and social media.

“No such organisation exists under the Government of Kenya,” he said, stressing that the programme is not endorsed by any official body.

The ministry urged the public to remain alert and to report any suspicious messages or online content related to such scams.

“Investigations are currently underway in collaboration with law enforcement and cybersecurity agencies,” Motari said.

Kenyans have been advised to report such scams through the ministry’s toll-free number 1533, by email at [email protected], or by visiting the nearest police station.

The advisory comes amid a growing wave of digital scams in Kenya, many of which specifically target low-income households by impersonating government empowerment programmes. These scams often require victims to pay bogus registration or processing fees in exchange for non-existent financial support.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the public from fraud and stressed that only verified platforms should be used to access or share information about official welfare programmes.
