Two Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers were killed and three others wounded after government forces repelled an early Monday morning attack by militias loyal to Jubaland state President Ahmed Mohamed Islaam, also known as Ahmed Madobe, on the outskirts of Beled Hawa district in the Gedo region.

According to a statement from Somalia’s Defence Ministry, the incident followed an unprovoked assault by militias led by Mahamoud Sayod Adan on SNA bases near Beled Hawa.

"The Somali National Army operating in the Gedo region has repelled an attack launched by militias acting under the command of the court-wanted Ahmed Madobe," the statement, seen by The Eastleigh Voice, reads.

Authorities arrested 10 militia members after successfully repelling the attack and regaining control of the SNA bases.

"The National Army successfully repelled the attack, dispersed the assailants, and captured ten of the militia members alive, taking full control of the locations from which the assault had been organised," the Ministry said.

During the operation, two Somali servicemen lost their lives, while three others with varying injuries are recovering in local hospitals.

"During the defensive operation, two brave soldiers of the national army, Lieutenant Mohamed Hassan Guutaale and Private Ali Muhumed Gooni, were martyred. The Ministry of Defence prays that Allah accepts their sacrifice. Three other soldiers were wounded and are currently receiving medical care," the Ministry added.

Situation now calm

"The situation in the area is now calm, and the national army remains fully engaged in securing the region, maintaining stability, and safeguarding the civilian population of Gedo."

While condemning the attack and praising Somali authorities for their response, the Ministry urged the militias to lay down their arms, surrender to the national army, and abandon activities aimed at destabilising the Gedo region.

"The Ministry issues a clear warning to the militias loyal to the court-wanted Ahmed Madobe to lay down their arms, surrender to the national army, and cease their involvement in actions that target the existence of the Somali state," the Ministry stated.

"The Ministry also calls on the people of Gedo to continue standing alongside the national forces and their commanders to prevent any threat to the country's security."
